Chapter 11

Anna got home last night from her trip; she had received a text message from Eve to say she was staying out for the night around ten pm. She was in the kitchen having breakfast when Eve came in, she looked happier than she had been for weeks.

Eve ate a piece of toast and had a cup of tea with her mother, they didn’t get a lot of time together. Anna was always travelling, and she liked to spend whatever time she could with Eve, when she could.

They chatted across the table about Tessa and Zoe being away and Eve told her mother about her plan to go to New York in July if her university schedule permitted it. Anna thought that was a good idea, Eve was going to miss her friends. She wondered who she had spent the night with and where, she didn’t ask as she respected the fact that Eve had just turned eighteen and she didn’t want to seem like she was questioning her new-found freedom.

They made plans for dinner together at their favourite restaurant in Double Bay for that night, Eve had her day planned, she was off to the hairdressers in the afternoon, so for now she went up to her room and went back to bed for a few hours, she needed to chill and process everything she had done last night and this morning.

Lying in bed Eve thought about Evan, about how she still didn’t know much about him, she did know he made her feel great every time he touched her… Evan was too god damn hot for his own good, she was turned on simply by being in his presence … He might be good to hang out with; he would certainly keep her occupied…

The hairdresser had talked Eve into a few highlights, something she had never done, and some layers to give her some definition. Why not thought Eve, everything else seemed to be changing, her hair may as well too?

Dinner with her mother was always spent talking about school and plans for Eve’s future, and when that got boring, they talked about fashion and shopping, they both loved to buy nice things. Anna had noticed Eve’s hair straight away; she couldn’t help but think how grown up her daughter looked. She was eighteen and driving and doing things adults did, they had never been big on rules and curfews because Eve spent so much time on her own, or with Tessa and Zoe. Anna trusted Eve, she was a smart girl and now was no different, Eve was a young woman, old enough to run her own life, and Anna would of course be there when she needed her, if she needed her.

‘Did you spend last night with someone I know?’ Anna just had to say it, she had been curious all day.

Eve looked at her mother like she was surprised. Anna was struggling with the fact, Eve was now a young woman, and what and who she spent time with was really none of her business.
